10 Common Misconceptions About Poker

Posted by admin

If you play poker regularly, and you understand the game exactly as it is, you probably know that there are misconceptions among people with no direct experience. You’ve probably heard many of these erroneous viewpoints. If you are like me, you spend a fair amount of time explaining to uninformed people precisely what the game is and what it is not. For the benefit of all, this article will clear up some of the more common misconceptions.

Conversely, if you never play poker, and your entire experience of the game is what you read in print and see in movies, you probably have many wrong ideas. That is to be expected. Please, allow me to enlighten you on a few points.

1. Poker is not casual. Many people think of the game as a mellow social pastime, where friends sit around drinking, laughing and whooping it up. In fact, there is nothing friendly about poker. You can be cordial with others at your table (and you should be), but the game itself is vicious. Played properly, it is a form of warfare. It is an aggressive battle for domination. I think of poker as “violence, without the violence.”

2. A poker face is not the main requirement to play. I cannot tell you how often I hear this misconception. Nearly every time I mention poker to someone whose only exposure to the game is the media, I hear some lame comment like, “Oh, you must have a good poker face.” No, a poker face, a steely-eyed gaze, is not the essence of skillful play. True, you do not want to be sending tells to your opponents, but the so-called poker face is widely misunderstood. The ability to create a poker face does not make you a good player. Consider this: When you play on the Internet, everyone has a poker face.

3. Winning at poker is not easy. Blame television for this one. You generally see only the winners on television. Those who win get the most exposure and are most often featured. The final table in a tournament, for example, is comprised solely of players who are winners. Very little attention is paid to those who lose, say nothing of the vast majority who bust out of tournaments without fanfare. Playing well takes a huge amount of study, discipline and practice. Succeeding at the game is far from automatic.

4. Women can play. The idea that poker is exclusively a man’s game is another falsehood. Years ago, many well-known authors wrote that women do not have the killer instinct necessary to play well. Time has proven that theory wrong. Nowadays, women compete at every level, and plenty of skilled women win in cash games and tournaments. The idea that poker is a man’s game is laughable these days, and I wouldn’t have included it among common misconceptions were it not for the fact that many still believe it.

5. Poker is not a game of mathematics. In blackjack, for example, you always have one best move at any moment. Your task is to determine what that move is. If you have 13 and the dealer is showing an ace, then you should hit. That is always true, no matter who is seated at the table or what they are doing. Poker is different. You must take other players into account, and the mathematically preferable move may not be wise. Top caliber players often debate what is the best move in a particular situation. Poker cannot be reduced to mathematics because there are too many human factors.

6. Poker is a not game of luck. This is perhaps the most common misconception, and it is dead wrong. Luck averages out. Over time, all players receive the same percentage of good hands and bad hands. The difference is what players do with those hands. A good player will maximize the amount won with good hands and minimize the amount lost with bad hands. The key element that separates winners from losers, over time, is not the cards dealt, but the decisions made. Stu Unger, three-time World Series of Poker champion, put it this way: “In cards, the luck always balances out. The good players are going to win. Any player that thinks card playing is a game of luck, I’ll show you a fool. That’s what the losers always say. The winners don’t worry about the short term; we play for the long term.”

7. Cheating is not rampant. The prevalence of cheating is another incorrect impression held by many. In private backroom games, cheating does happen occasionally. But in modern casino cardrooms and high-profile tournaments, where most of today’s professionals play, cheating is virtually nonexistent. (Online, however, is a different story. It is possible to cheat when playing on the Internet, due to the nature of the technology.) Although cheating is technically possible in some situations, and it does happen, it is not nearly the factor that many people suppose. If you are hesitant to play poker out of fear of being cheated, you are overreacting.

8. Poker is not an addiction. No matter what the media would have you believe, the vast majority of poker enthusiasts play because they enjoy the game, not because they are hooked in some way. Sure, a tiny percentage of players do struggle with addiction, but they are people with an addictive personality, whether or not they play poker. We should not blame poker for someone’s compulsive behavior any more than we should blame sex for someone being a rapist.

9. Poker is not sleazy. There is nothing even remotely “underbelly” about this beautiful game. A great many good and decent folks play for a wide variety of reasons, such as fun, challenge and personal betterment. Poker highlights the best of human interaction and calls into play the most honorable of human qualities, such as courage, sound reasoning and self-control. The game is a wonderful way to build character.

10. Poker is not illegal. Most people with a functioning brain do not actually believe this, but the forces of misguided morality want you to think that the game is against the law. It is not. Poker is not associated with crime in any way. Nor is it controlled by the mob. Not is it dangerous. You do not need to be on the lookout for gangsters. Or gunplay. No, you do not need to carry a sidearm and shoot your way out of the casino to protect your loot. You’ve been watching too many movies.

These are a few common misconceptions held by many in the public. If you encounter people with these ideas, please set them straight. But be understanding; it’s not their fault that they hold these incorrect viewpoints, which are passed off as fact everywhere in today’s media. It rests with us, intelligent members of the poker-playing community, to spread the truth regarding the magnificent game of poker.

Sports Betting Truths

The first ever recorded sports bets, took place on 10 September 1858, by two spectators watching a game between the Brooklyn Eckfords and the New York Mutuals, placed a 100$ bet as to whether or not John Holden would hit a home run. Holden himself was assured 25$ if he hit, he did and after the game all the debts were settled.

In 1865 again, in a match between the same teams, three players from the Mutuals agreed to deliberately loose a game in return of $100 each.

After the scandal involving the 1877 Louisville Grays and other fixed games prompted American League President Ban Johnson to impose a ban on all gambling inside

American League ballparks, beginning 1903. However this ban soon proved ineffective and betting flourished. Richard Higham was banned in 1882 after officiating games so that certain outcomes would be produced in return for money. The Giants manger was tainted after he betted and won 400$ on his teams winning the World Series in 1905.In 1919 eight members of the Chicago White Sox accepted money to loose the World Series to the Cincinnati Reds. Since 1943 some of the game’s biggest names have been tainted and expelled at some or the time for betting and accepting money for effected performance.

Gambling and players involvement has not been limited to baseball and has affected other games like German Soccer and Horse racing also. In 2005 25 year old Robert Hoyzer admitted having accepted money in return for dishonest officiating.

Betting in US dates back a long way, but the real thrust to this industry was with the legalization of betting in Nevada in 1931. After the mining industry started slowing down, gambling was legalized by the state dry on cash, and soon things started showing up.

Once the big casinos arrived on scene, many small sports betting shops were forced out of business.

Gamblers Anonymous was formed way back in 1957, when two men started meeting on a monthly basis and discussing their gambling and supporting each other. After gaining publicity from local media coverage, the first meeting of GA was held on September 1957 in Los Angeles, California.

Membership requires a commitment to stop gambling. Most of the members consider themselves compulsive gamblers, feeling that theirs is an illness which shall worsen with time if not faced. It is not a proactive organization and intervenes only when men or women feeling they can’t help themselves and contact the organization. The organization helps by giving its members certain guidelines to be strictly followed by them. There are no membership fees and no outside donations are accepted. It is supported solely by contributions from its members.

Considering the fact that 2 million or almost 1 percent of all Americans gamble as a \ compulsion the situation is grave and does need aid. Besides GA, there is also the National Council on Problem Gambling, helping people getting out of their addiction with gambling.

Hollywood has had its share of movies based on sports betting. The hustler, blue chip, and White Men Can’t Stand were all based on the issue of Sports Betting.

I am often asked how I can win consistently at sports betting when most people feel that they are doing well if they win one here or there. My general response is that I know winning betting systems and how to play the betting sports game. This usually brings more questions about what I mean by that to which I ask ” How do you determine the games you are going to bet on?” The three most common answers are:

  1. I get them from a sports radio show
  2. I hear about them from friends
  3. I find “free picks” on the Internet

These are not the best places to start winning regularly. While all of these sources may turn up a good pick now and then, they are generally the sexy picks that have big possible pay outs and should not be considered reliable enough to be betting on without solid back up. My solid back up is a sports betting system that consistently wins by playing a small percentage of games that are a virtual lock to win. The result of using this betting system is a group of games that are going to add to your bankroll and keep adding to it. This will give stability to your bankroll and allow you to analyze other sources for bets that you will have a lower chance of winning but will pay off bigger due to the Las Vegas sports odds and allow for the big win. Without a solid starting point you are likely to watch your money disappear.

Here is an example of what I am talking about. For the 2006 basketball season I used my system to bet on less then 100 NBA games. This is a very small percentage of games when you look at the typical schedule, which has each team playing 82 games and there are 30 teams. I will let you do the math, it’s a lot of games, but I only bet a few of them. You may ask why? Well, the system that I use analyzes the games as the season goes on and picked those games as winners with very low risk. And guess what, it was right, as I only lost 2 of those bets. My bankroll grew steadily on every other bet. I didn’t always have huge wins, there were some, but they all had positive results on my bankroll and allowed me to play other parts of the betting sports game. All due to the use of a winning sports betting system as the core of an overall betting system.

I am not saying that I didn’t bet on any other NBA games, I did bet other games for other reasons, but only when I felt they were relatively safe bets. You can now go back to the three typical responses above and analyze these to see if they are worth betting on. I do this often when I always look at the picks touted by others, as you have to think that some of them might have some research out into them. You always need to research them for yourself and then weigh out the risk/reward factor. If it falls in your “safe” betting range then you should place the bet. If it falls into your “unsafe” betting range then avoid betting on the game. I think that the most common problem people have when it comes to sports betting is that they bet too many games and they bet games without doing proper research. Doing that will kill your bankroll and you will lose the betting sports game and is a common mistake with a lot of sports bettors, especially the inexperienced.

Don’t think you will never lose a bet when you use a sports betting system, you will, but using one will give you consistent wins and when you have consistent wins from your core system then you can afford to take a loss here and there when you place other bets because your bankroll has regular winnings coming in. Over time you will see that most of your losses will come from bets placed trying to maximize your returns against the Vegas sports odds line and not from your betting system. That’s is OK and it will never stop happening, but the most important thing to remember so you can get yourself on the winning track, increase your bankroll and win often at the betting sports game is to use a winning betting system to point out the solid low risk bets that you will win and then research the rest to find the most rewarding of the riskier bets.

To make the most of your bankroll and turn it into something to brag about you need a betting system you can count on. The SportsBettingChamp System is the system that will do that. Find out more now. http://www.squidoo.com/winningbettingsystems/

Who Will Lead the Kentucky Derby?

Posted by admin

Horse racing is multi-dimensional. It’s a spectacle in the spring, a good bet the rest of the year. Sometimes it seems as entertaining when it’s routine. If people new to the game like what they see at the majors, it’s not so bad mid-week, year-round, either.

For the 132nd edition of the Run of the Roses on Saturday many may already have their picks butt, the six major Kentucky Derby preparation races winners are the favorite picks for the majority. Officially Barbaro, the winner of the Florida Derby, is expected to be the second choice when the post positions are drawn on Wednesday and Santa Anita Derby winner Brother Derek is expected to be both the morning-line and post-time favorite.

A feature that is standing out on this year’s Kentucky Derby horses is speed. We are going to have a field full of speed horses those that need to be on or near the lead. With all the speed that will be in the Kentucky Derby, it appears that for one of the favorites to hit the lead first he will need to back off the leaders in the early part of the race.

The pure speed horses are Brother Derek, Sinister Minister and Sweetnorthernsaint. These three have shown that they absolutely need to be at the front. Brother Derek and Sinister Minister posted the fastest times in their respective wins.

He started this years tournament three behind the overnight leader Johan Edfors, but then birdied the first five holes and just kept going without no turning back. Scott then went for a safety at the last and then a par five put him 20 under to give him his sixth European title.

Scotts golf was just extraordinary and a hat trick of birdies from the 10th allowed him a much tighter grip on the tournament and gave a much bigger chance of tying the European Tour record for having the fewest final round by a champion. He then needed a birdie in the last to equal Jamie Spence’s 12 under par 60 that he accomplished back in 1992 at the European Masters. Unable to do so, Scott decided to lay up short of the water and sand guard the front of the green and then had to settle for a par after his pitch was a little off line.

Henrik Stenson and Scot Colin Montgomerie were doing fairly well but were unable to keep up with Scott and beat his play. Scott expressed that Henrik did everything right during the tournament and should have been the one to take home the title but keeping up for the lead was somewhat over whelming, however the 2006 winner, Henrik, had to deal with being the second runner up.

At the beginning of last week Scott was placed as the world’s number eight in the ranking but will shoot up three more spots when the new ranking are released.

The American highest rated colt Curlin has lately made another impressive win at the world’s richest race in Dubai. The young offspring which was sired by Smart Strike and female Sherriff’s Deputy; both of Canadian descent was foaled in March 2004. This four-year old colt is property of the Midnight Cry Stables, Stonestreet Farm.

After coming from a major win at the Breeders’ Cup at the end of 2007; Curlin surprised the racing world with an easy victory last Saturday at the Nad Al Sheba race tracks in Dubai. The colt was ridden by Robby Albarado and trained by the famous, long-time people’s favourite Steve Asmussen whose training was giving most of the credit for the triumph achieved by Curlin besides the incredible skills and potency shown by the horse.

Albarado stated “This is such an amazing horse and I am honoured to ride such a great creature.” “I am just the pilot. They do the work and I just turn up and get all the glory, all I do is just hang on to him.

Curlin’s trainer Asmussen stated “it is a dream come true” for his professional career and a personal achievement to be part of the winner’s current success and affirms the colt has not yet reached its entire potential. Asmussen who is a clear visionary believes the North American tracks will see much more of Curlin this year; but for now it was time to come back home and take a well-deserved rest especially after the 22-hour returning flight.

Amongst Curlin’s eleven rivals were Asiatic Boy (second place) trained by Mike de Kock and American horse Well Armed (third place) trained by Irishman Eoin Harty. In fourth place we have A.P. Arrow then Greg Hunter, Lucky Find and let’s not forget Jalil from the Godolphin stables which was a real disappointment due to the weak performance followed by Gloria De Campeao, Premium Tap, Sway Yed, Kocab and the Japanese Vermilion.

Curlin’s sensational ran started well from the beginning while Well Armed led the race in first place and Asiatic Boy in second position for most of the 1 ¼ mile then Albarado made his move and the bright brown colour colt cruised through the remaining of the race length establishing a new World Cup record. There was no doubt which was the best horse.

With this new win Curlin’s career earnings summed up $8,807,800 approximately and it moves into third position in the North American horse racing list just behind Cigar and Skip Away. Some of Curlin’s major racing wins have been: Rebel Stakes, Arkansas Derby and Jockey Club Gold Cup all in 2007; the American Classics Preakness Stakes and Breeders’ Cup (2007), American Horse of the Year Award – 2007 and the 2008 Dubai World Cup considered the best accomplishment up to now.

Is the Worlds Greatest NBA Betting System for real? Who created the Worlds Greatest NBA Betting System and how long has it been around for? I will answer all of these questions in this review.

If you’re into sports betting, particularly NBA betting, then you’ve probably heard about the Worlds Greatest NBA Betting System. There is a lot of talk about this system around the internet these days, but where the heck did it come from?

After doing some research I was surprised to discover that this system was actually created over 10 years ago by a few retired NBA players, 2 retired NBA referees, and a highly educated mathematical professor. As it turns out, the system took many years of refining and since it’s creation it has had a whopping 98% pick accuracy rate! It was only recently that they all agreed to share this system with other sports betting endorsers.

Before grabbing a copy of the Worlds Greatest NBA Betting System, I wanted to talk to people who had used the system to rake in big profits. I was able to contact several people who used this system religiously and only had good things to say about it. Most people were making really great money with it and most of the people I talked to were complete beginners too.

I was pretty impressed that you don’t need to have any prior betting experience to use this system. This is great considering how little I’ve gambled in the past. In fact, I thought it was a nice touch that 24/7 customer support by email is included and there is also a toll-free phone number you can call to get your questions answered. I actually ended up calling a few times and the man working the phone was very helpful.

Once I signed up I immediately received the basketball selections for the entire season. I also now get access to lifetime picks for the one time fee.

I was glad to see that they absolutely offer a 100% no questions asked money back guarantee. This means that if you are not winning money with this system then you can instantly get your money back. This alone speaks volumes about the quality of this system.

In the end I have to say that if you are looking to make some serious cash from betting on basketball games then the Worlds Greatest NBA Betting System is highly recommend, click here

The players’ association have filed with the National Labor Relations Board two unfair labor practice charges against the NBA over issues with the new introduced ball and the league’s crackdown on player complaints.

Dallas owner Mark Cuban considers that this move was highly necessary regarding the position of NBA. Cuban was already a sharp critic of the new ball and how the league handled the complaints from the players, and he has even been fined by the League for his criticisms. Numerous players repeatedly made public complaints after the introduction of the new ball incorporating a micro-fiber composite. The new ball is a major issue, but they are complaining much more the “zero-tolerance policy” implemented this season.

NBA commissioner David Stern explained that he introduced the policy in order to prevent players to react too strongly after calls. Since the season starts, the new policy resulted to an increase in technical fouls called this season. But players are fined for each technical they receive forcing union director Billy Hunter to threaten the League about legal action if the referees keep on applying too severely the policy.

As Mavericks’ player representative, Jerry Stackhouse, he explained that calling a foul is part of basketball traditions and attempting to prevent it is vain.

In 255 games this season, refereed called over 175 unsportsmanlike technicals. In comparison, there were one third less technicals called last season through the same number of games last season. But it is worth to notice that it is equivalent to the number with the amount from two years ago. Hunter explained that the role of the union is to defend its members and after consultation of their membership and player leadership, they decide it was the right action to take.

The players felt that they were entitled to have input on both changes before they were put into play. They argued that the League did not consult them about any of the two major changes which occurred this season.
